DULUTH, Ga. -- Federal authorities say a methamphetamine bust in Gwinnett County is the largest seizure of its kind in the eastern United States.
Channel 2 Action News reporter Manuel Bojorquez was in Gwinnett County when details of the operation were released Wednesday.
DEA agents said 350 pounds of meth and 1 kilo of cocaine were seized from two homes in Duluth.
“This is the largest seizure of methamphetamine by law enforcement east of the Mississippi,” said Rodney Benson with the Drug Enforcement
Administration. “The approximate wholesale value is $6 million. If you broke this down to the retail street distribution level, we’re talking a value
of tens of millions of dollars.”
Officials have arrested four men in connection with the bust. Police said it appeared the men were part of a Mexican drug trafficking ring that was
using Atlanta as a hub.
Police said most of the drugs were found in the walls of a home on Cambridge Park Drive and a home on Buckingham Place Sunday and Monday.
Agents said they believe the homes were used as “stash houses” -- which is when drug traffickers use homes in quiet, middle class neighborhoods to
hide them.
The home on Buckingham Place is only a couple doors down from a home that was the scene of a shoot out on Monday, in which one man was killed.
Officials said they do not believe the two incidents are related.
